An Evolution of Digital Influencers: Max Headroom to Noonoouri

Last month, a CGI (computer-generated imagery) singer become the first creation of its kind to secure a major record deal. The virtual entity named Noonoouri officially released a debut single after signing with Warner Music. She is one of many virtual influencers, with more emerging every day, but she was the first to sign a record deal.
Many decades earlier, there was another persona that paved the way for how we see a digital on-screen personalities. His name was Max Headroom. He was dubbed “television’s first computer generated celebrity.”
Few characters capture the essence of the 1980s quite like Max Headroom. With his glitchy appearance and quirky personality, he first appeared as a fictional artificial intelligence entity, portrayed by actor Matt Frewer. He was a television host in the British TV movie “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future” (1985). Max’s appearance was characterized by his stuttering speech patterns and trademark digitized background.
Max Headroom’s popularity soared with the arrival of the American television series “Max Headroom” (1987-1988). Set in a dystopian future where corporations held immense power, the show featured Max as a digital personality who challenged societal norms such as consumerism, media influence, and technology.
What I most remember of Max Headroom was the use of computer-generated imagery and digital effects. His appearance was created through a combination of makeup, prosthetics, new video processing techniques, and computer-generated backgrounds. He foreshadowed the metaverse avatars and digital influencers to come, including Noonoouri. His commentary on media manipulation and technology’s role in society remains relevant to this day.
