A warm welcome at Gen Con to a growing, diverse gaming community

Gen Con 2023
Gen Con 2023

Gen Con, the renowned annual gathering of tabletop gaming enthusiasts, is not just about dice, cards, and miniatures. It’s a testament to the power of inclusivity, fostering a space where gamers can come together and celebrate their shared passion.

I had an opportunity to attend my first Gen Con this past week with my brother, and we were pleasantly surprised how welcoming and inclusive the organizers and 70,000+ crowd was. The sheer scale of the event is impressive, and playing a new game with strangers or trying to learn new rules can be intimidating.

The event organizers did a great job of setting a positive mood right away, supported by an army of passionate game facilitators, mostly volunteers. This positive feeling continued throughout the multi-day event.

Gen Con promoted an inclusive atmosphere, welcoming individuals regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or physical ability to ensure that all attendees feel safe, respected, and valued. This includes implementing strict anti-harassment policies and accessibility options.

An interest in gaming has increased significantly since the pandemic, bring many new voices to the gaming world. By shining a spotlight on new games and their creators, Gen Con presented role models for aspiring creators. The event featured a wide range of games that cater to various interests, skill levels, and preferences. Workshops, seminars, and panels often addressed topics like diversity in gaming, fostering open conversations that encourage learning and growth.

Games are meant to be a safe space of fun competition and learning, a way to help people feel connected to one another. The pandemic amplified this desire even more. By demonstrating the value of diversity and acceptance as organic to gaming, Gen Con may inspire other gaming conventions, communities, and companies to follow suit.
