Innovations from the Past: A Tale of Two Michigan Museums

I recently had a chance to return to my hometown in Detroit and returned to two locations that I visited when I was young: The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village in Dearborn and Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum in Farmington Hills. It has been many decades since I had been to either location, and I was happy to see they are alive and thriving! While each museum offers a distinct experience, both serve as vibrant testaments to the spirit of innovation.

The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village provide an expansive look into America’s industrial past, highlighting the ingenuity that shaped our modern society. Founded by Henry Ford, this museum complex offers a comprehensive journey through the milestones of American innovation.

The Henry Ford Museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts that reflect the technological advancements that have driven progress. You can see the first automobile, the iconic Model T, and the presidential limousine that carried John F. Kennedy. The museum’s exhibits cover advances in aviation, agriculture, and information technology, illustrating how these advancements transformed daily life.

This open-air museum brings to life the past through meticulously restored buildings relocated to this site, many that would have been demolished in their original locations if it weren’t for persistent preservation efforts. Greenfield Village focuses on experiential learning, allowing visitors to engage with history hands-on. In contrast to the grand scale of the Henry Ford Museum, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum offers a smaller but equally compelling, exploration of innovation. Located in Farmington Hills, this museum is a treasure trove of mechanical wonders, showcasing the creativity or carnivals and games of a bygone era. The museum houses an eclectic collection of coin-operated machines, automata, and vintage arcade games. Each exhibit is a marvel of mechanical engineering over the last century and a half, reflecting the innovative spirit of their creators. Visitors can interact with the machines, experiencing firsthand the clever mechanisms that bring these creations to life. From fortune-telling automata to mechanical dioramas, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of mechanical innovation. The museum’s founder, Marvin Yagoda, curated this collection with a passion for preserving and showcasing the ingenuity of these mechanical marvels. Best of all, you can play all of the exhibits with a roll of quarters, including a nice collection of 1980s video games and pinball machines. 

Together, these Detroit landmarks paint a comprehensive picture of how innovation has shaped, and continues to shape, our world.
